AA (advanced aspherical) and aspherical lens elements provide corner-to-corner resolution and contrast throughout the zoom range. Three ED elements and one Super ED element reduce chromatic aberration and colour bleeding, while the circular nine-blade aperture enhances full-frame bokeh.

The lens offers half-macro capability throughout the 70–200mm zoom range. Minimum focusing distance is 0.26 m at the wide end and 0.42 m at the telephoto end, with a maximum magnification of 0.5x throughout.

Fast autofocus matches high-speed bodies

Four high-thrust XD linear motors work with precision floating focus groups for extremely fast and accurate focus drive. Autofocus speed is increased by up to approximately 20% throughout the zoom range when shooting stills, while focus tracking continues during zooming.

Refined movie performance and imagery

Linear Response MF provides direct and linear manual focus control. The breathing compensation function supported by compatible α series bodies reduces unwanted image shifts while focusing. Optical image stabilisation can work with compatible in-body stabilisation for smooth, stable handheld footage.

Top-class performance with teleconverters

The lens is compatible with Sony's 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters. With the 2.0x teleconverter, 1:1 macro can be achieved at all focal lengths, while the 1.4x teleconverter enables up to 0.7x macro at all focal lengths.
