Sony Fx5 Launched..Open Gate is in town now...

The Sony FX5 is a full-frame, compact camera in Sony's Cinema Line designed to bridge the gap between small form-factor devices like the FX3 and high-end cinema tools like the BURANO. Announced in July 2026, it introduces several "firsts" for Sony's entry-tier cinema cameras, most notably internal RAW recording and full sensor Open Gate capture.

Imaging & Sensor Performance

• Stacked Full-Frame Sensor: Features a newly developed 16.6-megapixel effective full-frame Exmor RS CMOS sensor that significantly minimizes rolling shutter artifacts. 

• Triple Base ISO: Offers three native base ISO positions (ISO 800, ISO 4000, and ISO 12800) to ensure exceptionally clean shadow detail and wide exposure latitude across shifting lighting conditions. [

• Dual Gain Shooting: A first for the FX series, this architecture squeezes maximum performance from the sensor to unlock a claimed 16+ stops of dynamic range (15+ stops native in S-Log3) for smoother tone gradations.

Recording Formats & Resolution

• Full-Frame Open Gate: Captures a full-pixel 3:2 readout across the complete sensor area at up to 5K 60p. This allows flexible cropping for anamorphic lenses and dual aspect-ratio deliverables (e.g., standard widescreen and vertical social formats). 

• Internal X-OCN RAW: Records directly to memory cards in Sony’s proprietary 16-bit scene-linear compressed RAW format without requiring an external recorder. It includes space-saving X-OCN LT, C1, and C2 codecs. 

• High Frame Rates: Capable of shooting up to 5K at 60 fps, 4.5K/4K at 120 fps, and FHD at 240 fps. A planned firmware roadmap for late 2027 will unlock 4K 240p in X-OCN. 

Autofocus & Processing

• AI Processing Unit: Uses the high-speed BIONZ XR2 engine paired with a dedicated AI chip. It powers advanced real-time subject recognition and tracking for humans (pose estimation), animals, and birds.

• Upgraded 5-Axis IBIS: In-body image stabilisation features roughly double the roll/rotation correction range compared to previous compact systems, complemented by a Dynamic Active mode and smooth continuous Clear Image Zoom.

Design & Professional Monitoring

• Cinema-Grade Assist Tools: Includes hardware-accelerated False Color, Waveform, Vector Scope, and Focus Mapping overlays, directly mimicking higher-tier CineAlta systems.

• VENICE-Inspired Interface: Adapts a high-end cinema menu structure. Physical controls add a Multi-Function Dial taken from the VENICE 2 for swift on-set muscle memory adjustments.

• Hardware Design: Incorporates an integrated active cooling fan (offering 3x the airflow of the FX3), a multi-angle 3.5-inch 4-axis touchscreen, dual CFexpress Type A / SDXC card slots, and an array of direct-mounting screw holes to build rigs without an external cage. (Note: It does not feature a built-in electronic variable ND filter).

• Power & Audio Accessories: Powered by the high-capacity NP-SA100 battery for roughly 130–170 minutes of continuous 5K recording. Launches alongside an optional detachable 0.58-type tilting OLED viewfinder and an XLR-H2 top handle unit capable of 32-bit float audio capture.
